The Play

In Harold Pinter’s darkly comic one-act play, two hitmen, Ben and Gus, wait in a windowless basement for their next assignment. As the tension builds, mysterious food orders arrive via a dumb waiter, unsettling the pair and forcing them to confront their roles in a larger, unseen system. A masterclass in menace and absurdity, The Dumb Waiter explores power, loyalty, and the unnerving silences between words.

The Group

The Phoenix Players are an active drama group from Tubbercurry in South Sligo, the spiritual home of the Amateur Drama movement, and are one of the oldest Amateur Drama Groups in the country, having being formed in 1945. This year marks a very special year for the Phoenix Players as they celebrate their 80th year. They have partaken in Drama Festivals since their foundation, and were winners of the 2021 All-Ireland One-Act (Confined) Finals in Ennis. In addition, they regularly perform musicals, pantomimes, and large scale local productions featuring large local casts of young and old alike, at their home theatre, St Brigid's Hall, Tubbercurry.
